Now that the ELD mandate is in full force, there are still several lingering questions about compliance. While many fleets researched their concerns in advance, some issues did not arise until after the mandate went into effect. The following are the latest concerns facing ELD compliance as well as solutions to address them.

  1. If law enforcement does not intend to enforce the mandate until April, why do I need to be compliant now? There are some misconceptions regarding ELD enforcement. While officers are not putting drivers out of service for violations, they are taking notes. Officers will still issue citations and they are monitoring who is compliant and who is a habitual offender. The hours of service (HOS) requirements are still in effect as well. Even if a driver escapes a citation for violating the ELD mandate, an officer can still issue citations for HOS violations.
  2. How can law enforcement tell if my fleet is compliant? How are they enforcing the mandate? The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) provides guidelines for inspections. Trained officers and inspectors perform assessments at various stations across the country. They inspect vehicles and hold them to the standards laid out in safety regulations. In addition to their usual inspection, these individuals will also check for ELD compliance.
  3. All vehicles in my fleet have an ELD; however, I just found out my device is not compliant. What do I do?

This is a problem plaguing many fleets. Several fleets waited until the final quarter to implement an ELD solution, which meant they had less time to research. Several disreputable vendors cropped up looking to make a profit. Unfortunately, their devices are not always compliant.

Upon discovering their ELD solution is non-compliant, fleets have eight days to implement an acceptable device. However, it can be difficult to know which vendors to trust. That is why DriverCheck developed an ELD solution for truckers by truckers. Our device meets all of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s (FMCSA) requirements and is easy to use.
