Motor carriers and owner operators have until December 16 of this year to ensure their logging devices are FMSCA-compliant ELDs. Though the technology and the regulations have been years in the making, many are still somewhat unclear on the numerous differences between FMCSA-compliant ELDs and their AOBRD predecessors. Several critical shortcomings of older devices that make them non-compliant with FMCSA requirements include:

  • Insufficient automatic data capture capabilities
  • Allowing manual location entry
  • Unregulated/nonstandard driving decision and stopping decision parameters
  • Failure to support data integrity check functions
  • No electronic data conveyance for roadside inspections
  • Inability to log sensor malfunctions or data inconsistencies

Several other factors differentiate AOBRDs from approved ELDs. The grandfather clause has allowed many truck drivers to operate ELD hardware with AOBRD software, and in some cases even allowing for older hardware as well. This all comes to an end December 16. How are you preparing? Fleet reporting and tracking hardware and software are crucial to promoting safety, improving efficiency, and maintaining regulatory compliance for roadside inspections.
