Defensive drivers:<\/p>\n

  1. Are always ready with preventative measures, in advance of when they are needed.<\/li>\n
  2. Carefully monitor the actions of other drivers, adjusting for their poor skills or unsafe driving practices.<\/li>\n
  3. Command strong driving skills, and understands the limitations and challenges of the specific vehicle being driven.<\/li>\n
  4. Follow the rules of the road, including those regarding speed limits and road hazards.<\/li>\n
  5. Monitor pedestrians and animals that are in, or could move into, the driver\u2019s space.<\/li>\n
  6. Never drive while fatigued and are always alert for changing safety situations.<\/li>\n
  7. Are physically fit and prepared to drive\u2014no alcohol or drugs, including over the counter medications.<\/li>\n
  8. Properly load all freight, based on safety, weight, and distribution requirements.<\/li>\n
  9. Quickly compensate for challenging weather conditions, road related issues, and traffic.<\/li>\n
  10. Use safe, inspected, up-to-date equipment. (Broken tail lights, poor brakes, balding tires, and other equipment issues are often major contributors to collisions.)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
