""Safety problems seem to plague some motor carriers while others always have smooth sailing. So what separates these struggling fleets from successful ones? The answer is simple: prosperous fleets make safety a top priority. Implementing a culture of safety, however, isn’t always fast or simple. Here are some of the ways that top fleets are improving their safety practices:

Safety Technology and Vehicle Maintenance

Several fleets implement safety cameras to help reduce insurance costs over time. But telematics tell a much more valuable and interesting story. Visual data is subject, difficult to parse, and prone to error. Data captured through telematics can be analyzed and displayed in a wide variety of viewpoints, enabling insight into every aspect of a transportation business – from driver behaviors to vehicle conditions and beyond.

Why Hiring Processes Matter

While fleets can implement safety policies and procedures, the relative success of the campaign hinges on the actual drivers. Motor carriers need to take a close look at several factors before hiring a driver such as a driver’s accident history and job history. A full accident and incident history can show if the driver is careless. It can also show whether these accidents are old or recent. A driver who had accidents several years ago deserves a second look compared to the driver whose record is littered with accidents up to the present day.

Job history may seem like a surprising precondition, but it offers valuable insight. A driver who jumps from job to job may be trying to conceal a delinquent past. While the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) is working on a drug and alcohol testing clearinghouse to identify unsafe drivers, it will not go into effect until 2020. Until then, drivers can move from state to state to hide safety infractions. While job-hopping does not always indicate safety or legal wrongdoings, it does display a lack of loyalty to employers. A driver who bounces from job to job is less likely to care about the company’s safety initiatives because that individual does not plan to work there for long.

Establishing a culture of safety is a long-term goal that requires a lot of nurturing. Companies that invest in safety technology but then do nothing with the data are no better off than companies without it are.
